In south-west Africa there is a small animal measuring barely 290 millimetres and called the 'sentinel of the desert', or more simply the meerkat. This small carnivore, recognizable by its blond coat strewn with dark fringes on the back, lives in family groups within a colony, in vast burrows. The meerkat stands on its hind legs to watch over the group and warn in case of danger.
